Bursaries for post-graduate journalism training

The Scott Trust offers eight bursaries each year for aspiring journalists to study for a post-graduate qualification in either newspaper/online journalism or broadcast journalism. The courses are based at either City University (London); Goldsmiths College, University of London; the University of Sheffield; or Leeds Trinity & All Saints.

The aim of these awards is to assist students who face financial difficulty in attaining the qualifications needed to pursue a career in media.

As a media organisation we are keen to reflect the society we serve. We encourage graduates from diverse social and ethnic backgrounds to apply, particularly those from minority ethnic backgrounds – a group recognised as being under-represented in media. We are committed to offering the majority of the awards to applicants from this group*.

Past beneficiaries of the awards have gone on to successful careers at a variety of media organisations. Although the bursaries do not offer employment within Guardian Media Group, several awardees have been offered jobs with GMG titles and businesses following their training.

A bursary pays for tuition fees and provides a subsistence allowance of £5,000. The course involves several weeks’ work experience within Guardian Media Group, which will be arranged for awardees by our scheme co-ordinator.

We select applicants for shortlist interviews as follows, based on both the universities’ and the Scott Trust’s selection criteria:

A graduate and a permanent resident in the United Kingdom, ideally you will have had some basic paid or unpaid work experience in journalism, or similar experience, and need the financial support to progress in your career. You will also have built up a portfolio of your work or evidence of your journalism/writing/blogging, and you will be able to show commitment to a career in media.

We are accepting applications from Saturday February 9th 2008.
