The Scott Trust Ltd, owner of Guardian Media Group plc, offers eight bursaries each year for aspiring journalists to study for a postgraduate qualification in newspaper, web or broadcast journalism.

Two print bursaries are offered at City University, London (MA in Newspaper Journalism). One print bursary is offered at Goldsmiths College, University of London (MA in Journalism). Two print bursaries are offered at the University of Sheffield (Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism).

One web journalism bursary is offered at the University of Sheffield (MA Web Journalism).

Two broadcast bursaries are offered at either; University of Sheffield (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); Leeds Trinity University College (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); University of The West of Scotland (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); Cardiff University (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); Nottingham Trent University (Postgraduate Diploma in Radio Journalism); University of Central Lancashire, Preston (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); City University, London (MA in Broadcast Journalism); Staffordshire University (Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism); Bournemouth University (MA Multi-Media Journalism); Falmouth University (MA Multi-Media Broadcast Journalism or MA International Journalism).

The primary aim of these awards is to assist students who face financial difficulty in attaining the qualifications needed to pursue a career in media. As a media organisation we are keen to reflect the society we serve and we recognise that certain groups are under-represented within media. So, we particularly encourage graduates from diverse social and/or ethnic backgrounds to apply.

Past beneficiaries of the awards have gone on to successful careers at a variety of media organisations. Although the bursaries do not offer employment within Guardian Media Group, several awardees have been offered jobs with GMG titles and businesses following their training. A bursary pays for tuition fees and provides a subsistence allowance of £5,000. The course involves several weeks’ work experience within Guardian Media Group, which will be arranged for awardees by our scheme coordinator.

We select applicants for shortlist interviews as follows, based on both the universities’ and The Scott Trust Ltd’s selection criteria: A graduate and a permanent resident in the United Kingdom, ideally you will have had some basic paid or unpaid work experience in journalism, or similar experience, and need the financial support to progress in your career. You will also have built up a portfolio of your work or evidence of your journalism/writing, and you will be able to show commitment to a career in media.

Applications for 2010 are now closed.

Applications for next year will open in February 2011.
